Am 5. bzw. 11.

On 5 and 11 October 2005 the High-Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC), under the leadership of the Principal Investigator Prof. Dr. Gerhard Neukum of Freie Universitaet Berlin, onboard the ESA spacecraft Mars Express obtained image data in orbits 2216 and 2238 with a ground resolution of approximately 30 meters per pixel. The data were acquired in the region Orcus Patera at approximately 14° northern latitude and 177° eastern longitude.

Orcus Patera is an enigmatic and often overlooked elliptical depression at the outermost eastern margin of common Martian Maps. It is located between the volcanoes Elysium Mons and Olympus Mons. The strong elliptical depression extends approximately 380 km (NNE-SSW) by 140 km (ESE_WNW) and has a flat planar floor. The rim of the depression rises up to 1.8 km above the surroundings whereas the floor is located 400-600 m below the surroundings.

The term Patera is used for complex or irregular formed craters with a low relief. Most Paterae are formed by volcanism such as Hadriaca Patera and Tyrrhena Patera at the northeastern margin of the Hellas impact basin. However, the formation of Orcus Patera still remains unknown. Aside from volcanism there are two further interpretation likely responsible for its formation. First, Orcus Patera is also considered as a large deformed impact crater or through erosion of aligned impact craters. Second, the depression could also resemble a large compressional structure.

Nadir Image [5]

The existence of tectonic forces at Orcus Patera are very well recognizable by the presence of numerous graben which cut its rim (Box 1). The large up to 2.5 km wide graben are oriented approximately East-West and are only visible on the rim and the near surroundings. Large graben structures within the depression are absent due to the coverage by later deposits. But on the floor, smaller graben structures are also present (Box 2). This indicates that several tectonic events occurred in this region. In addition, it also suggests multiple episodes of deposition and depression filling. The occurrence of wrinkle ridges within the depression proves that not just extensional (cf. graben) but also compressional forces shaped this region (Box 3). The dark bizarre-looking areas near the centre of the depression were likely formed by aeolian processes (Box 4). Small impact events have excavated and exposed dark material of depression which is redistributed and transported by wind activity.

The colour scenes have been derived from the three HRSC-colour channels and the nadir channel. The perspective views have been calculated from the digital terrain model derived from the stereo channels. The anaglyph image was calculated from the nadir and one stereo channel. The black and white high resolution images were derived form the nadir channel which provides the highest detail of all channels.
